Final edit!

I have completed my last read-through of Vhan, and am now doing my last final quick edit before going to beta readers, putting in the corrections that I noted, and throwing in a scattering of hints and changes that will tie it together with the (now planned) prequel. I expect to be done, with luck, before the middle of May. Honestly, I don’t think it will take even that long.

Again, if you have any interest in being a beta reader for Vhantalya, please email me at Melaradark@gmail.com with the subject ‘Vhan Beta Read’. I have beta readers lined up for Scarlett but only one or two for Vhan. I would like four, if possible, so there are a couple of slots available for anyone who feels they have the time, desire, or energy to read it cover to cover and answer a few questions.

Thank you!

Damn you muse!

So here I am, innocently writing away on Reboot. I’m doing a particularly difficult scene emotionally, and my writing tends to slow into short bursts when that happens.

I’m staring at the screen, my brain deep in the story, trying to get into the heads of the characters. Who would say what? What are they feeling right now? What would their reactions be? The usual. Totally focused.

And in waltzes my muse, a rolled up manuscript in her hand (my current editorial draft of Vhantalya, of course), and whaps it across the back of my skull.

BAM!

Just like that, I’m getting all sorts of ideas for a brand new book, a prequel to my Immortal Elements series. Characters, details, setting, plot; lions and tigers and bears, oh my!

Ok, ok, fine. I indulge my muse, flipping over to my bible for the series and jotting down some quick notes. Maybe if I get it out of my head and stored somewhere safe, I can get back to concentrating on Reboot. If I *do* write a prequel book to an already planned ten book series, it’s going on the end of my publishing timeline. There’s no rush.

Done, back to Reboot. Get another hundred words down.

My muse, the wonderful and hateful bitch that she is, is not to be daunted. The Immortal Elements series – of which Vhantalya is the first book – is a favorite of hers. In fact, Vhantalya itself came in the same way; with that glorious, furious nymph backhanding me over the head out of nowhere.

Honestly, I think she only talks to me at all so I’ll write this series. Allowing me to do my other books is something she (barely) tolerates in exchange.

So she hits me again. ‘Oh! I could do this in the prequel, that would explain that character in the main series!’

Jot it down again, start to look back at Reboot. My muse braces herself, lifts the manuscript high…

So, now I have a headache, and about ten more ideas written down for this prequel, and not another word of Reboot written. I’m afraid to look at it now. She hits wicked hard.

Hopefully if I placate her she’ll go back to sleep for a little while and I can get back to it. For now, I need to dig up my ibuprofen and probably some neosporin for all these papercuts on my scalp. Oh, also, I’ll be adding The Ruhkend Blade up on my book timeline of works in progress.

I’m afraid she’ll bludgeon me senseless if I don’t.

I artify as well!

Hello all you crazy cats and kittens!

So I don’t only write, I do art as well. I’ve been doing digital paintings for years (as well as photography). I have been getting back into it more lately to do my book covers, and figured why not do some illustrations of my original works as well?

I have created an ArtStation account to post my works, including my book covers and some fan art, as well as these illustrations. This is a WIP, but I will be slowly adding my past art as well as the two book covers I’ve done so far (For Vhan and Scarlett). Some of it may eventually go up for sale but for now I’m going one step at a time.

If you like what you see, feel free to favorite and comment! Heck, if you hate it too…why not?

Still ticking along on Reboot, and as soon as I get the end of the first draft in sight I’ll be doing a cover for that as well and posting it up. I have to say, so far I am loving this story!

Till next time!

Cover is up!

Finally! So it took a lot longer than I was expecting. Clearly I have a lost a bit of the old speed that I had (breaks out the walker and hacks a few coughs in geriatric), and this cover has a lot of little fiddly details that took a lot of time. Still, here we are!

I’m about halfway through my reread of Vhantalya, highlighting areas that I need to quickly neaten up, and then we’ll be to the beta readers. If I have talked to you about being a beta reader, or if you are interested in being one, please email me and include in the subject header which story you are interested in beta reading. I only need about four per story, and I believe Scarlett is full. Also, don’t limit yourself to just what’s on the front page! Look at my future project timelines and if you see any there you’d be interested in trying your hand at, give me a shout. Just keep in mind the timelines those will be finished.

For those that I select for beta reads, there will be a deadline to get it back to me, as well as a form that will ask particular questions or what kind of specific feedback I may be looking for, in addition to the usual general feedback. Mostly, looking for plot holes, inconsistencies, good pacing, things like that.

So that’s where I am with Vhantalya. I’m on schedule with Reboot as well, knocking out a nice ten thousand words plus a week. At this rate I should be finishing on schedule for June/July with the first draft. I might be a bit biased, but so far I think it’s some of the best writing I have ever done. After that, it’s off to find an agent!

Lastly, I’m also working on my artwork, not just book covers. I used to have my work on Deviant Art a long time ago, but l looked at it recently to see if I wanted to revive it and I don’t think I want to keep on with that site. Instead, I will be building a website and portfolio for my art on ArtStation. Once that website is up and running, I will be linking it to this page. I specialize in digital photorealistic/semi-photorealistic paintings but I want to expand my hand into more cartoon/animation/comic styles as well.

Love you peeps!

Some totally healthy and not at all disturbing musings

Me: Do you know what this book needs? A living mobius strip.

My wife: Give it teeth.

42 is the answer to the question of Life, the Universe, and Everything. I’ve heard it said that the reason Deep Thought gave this answer is because the asterisk, a symbol used in programming as a wild card or ‘anything you want it to be’, is designated in ASCII as ’42’.

Thus, the answer to Life, the Universe, and Everything is ‘anything you want it to be’.

I like that. That’s my canon.

Ladies, gentlemen, and all in between: for exchanges like the one above, and a million other reasons I could never hope to properly convey, my wife is my 42.

That is all.

Here we go…

Reboot is now at 3 chapters, 24 pages, and sailing along. Some of my best work, if I do say so myself.

As far as Vhantalya, the cover is almost done, and the final once over and polish before she toddles off to beta readers begins…now.

I Dudditz!

Hello everyone!

I was going to wait to post this until I had finished the book cover as well, but it’s looking like that’s going to take several more days worth of work to get it where I want it to be, so look for that to be up soon!

Exciting news to share! Yesterday at 2:22 pm I finished the second draft of Vhantalya! Yes, that means on Twos-day, 2/22/22 at 2:22 pm I finished draft 2. I laughed when I saw that. Hopefully it’s a sign of good fortune ahead!

Vhantalya, the first book in my Immortal Elements series, has been a passion project of mine for well over a decade. I wrote the first draft in just about two weeks, flat out. Over the next several years (longer than I’d like to admit), I changed the beginning a hundred times, added some here, took away a little there, tweaked this and that, and started writing even more stories in my fictional world of Kaloran. Intended at first to be just a little stand-alone one-shot, this story has blossomed and bloomed and inspired what is now a ten book series that will continue with The Tree Y’Edenel, due to be done in 2024.

This project has been especially near and dear to my heart, and I’m beyond excited to get it finished up and out there.

Next steps? Well, I’m not even going to look at the story for at least a week. I am using this time to finish up the cover and get started on my next book, which I’m aiming to have finished around June/July of this year. In a week I will do a start to finish re-read of Vhantalya, making notes and tweaking little edits here and there. Then, it will be ready to go to the beta readers. Once I have feedback returned from them, hopefully there is only one last spit-and-polish, and then it’s off to find an agent!

More to come, stay tuned!

Just a quick update

Hello everyone! Writing is ticking along steadily if not as profusely as I would like. I’m deep into editing on Vhantalya now, including some fleshing out of some scenes and characters. I am very on track to getting its editing finished and to beta readers hopefully by end of February, or end of March at the latest.

I’m also well on track to getting the first draft and edit of Reboot finished and to beta readers’ come June. I will begin my rewrite of Scarlett, and expect to begin my official search for an agent/trad publisher, at that time.

In the meantime, I have created a comprehensive project list and timeline that I will be putting up here shortly on this website. I currently have 38 solid projects in various states of completion and there are a couple beyond even that, that haven’t yet made the ‘official’ list for reasons. Obviously I cannot do one of these a year so my goal is to get at least three done per year. At a certain point, if I have not been able to secure an agent or had luck with traditional publishing, I will switch once again to a self-publishing avenue.

The main page will still only contain the three works expected to be finished in a given year, but you’ll have more of an idea of what is to come!

Happy Holidays!

Hello everyone! Yes, I’m still alive and still working diligently on my projects. I realized while editing Vhantalya that the story was only about a hundred and sixty pages, and as I want it to be a novel and not a novella or short story, I have been adding in new scenes that will set up and tie in the sequels a bit more, and expanding some scenes a bit more realistically. As well, I am delving into the characters, their histories, and their development in a far more rich way.

My plan is to still have this ready for beta readers by summer, along with Reboot. After the holidays, my writing time and ability should be taking off a bit more. I am also working on the cover art for Vhantalya so expect to see that posted up in the next day or two.

For those who follow my Facebook page, you might notice that I have posted up some Wombo art. For those unfamiliar with Wombo, it takes a set of words and paints a unique image via AI based on those keywords and different art styles. I won’t be posting the Wombo art here, but on the page I have taken certain scenes I am currently in the middle of writing and used key words from those scenes to create a ‘dream art’ of what I am working on. I have also cut and pasted the part of the scene that inspired said art. It’s kind of both a teaser and a metric of what I am working on in particular at that time.

That’s it for now! I just wanted to say Happy Holidays and a grand New Year to all!

Public Service Announcement!

Back up your work! Right now. Do it. Back it up. Preferably to a thousand different places. Whatever it is.

So I haven’t posted any updates in a little bit and here is why.

Despite the fact that I know better – I really really KNOW better- I didn’t have Scarlett backed up to anything other than an old USB drive I’ve been using for a donkey’s age. Everything else? Backed up elsewhere. Scarlett? Nope.

Well, the USB crapped itself. After working for an entire day with various recovery software, and then even shipping it to a professional recovery service with a stellar reputation – second only to actual law enforcement forensic data recoveries – it’s gone. A year and a half of writing, 90,000 words, over 200 pages. Just gone.

There’s no getting it back.

BACK UP YOUR WORK RIGHT NOW! Even if you know better. Even if you usually do.

For now, clearly Scarlett will not be done by end of year. I’m pretty much stuck starting from scratch. So I have pushed Scarlett back to the end of NEXT year, and for now will instead be focusing on Vhantalya’s rewrite/final edits, and getting Reboot finished. I’m still aiming for summer on both of those. More specific dates will be upcoming as I know them.

That’s all for now.

I’m seeing an eggnog and fireball in my future.
